Nairobi is the largest city in Kenya. In Nairobi, there are 10 buildings that stand taller than 80 m (262 ft). The tallest building in the city is the 38-storey, 140 m (459 ft) New Central Bank Tower.[1] The second-tallest building in the city is the Teleposta Towers, standing at 120 m (394 ft) tall with 29 storeys.[2] The Most recent skyscraper to be constructed, the I&M Bank tower completed in 2001, is 99.1 m (325 ft) tall, making it the 5th tallest building in Kenya.
Nairobi's history of towers began with the Hilton Nairobi (1969), the NSSF Building (1973), and the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in 1974. Buildings in the city remained relatively short in the city until the late 1960s when the city experienced its first skyscraper boom. From 1960 to 1980, Nairobi witnessed a major expansion of skyscraper and high-rise construction. Many of the city's office towers were completed during this period, such as the New Central Bank Tower. A near twenty-year lull in building construction came after this expansion, though Nairobi has experienced a smaller second building expansion beginning in the late 1990s and continuing into the present.[3]
The tallest tower that is under construction in Nairobi is Delta Corner Tower A at 75 m (246 ft) and 21 stories. As of March 2011[update], there are 6 high-rises under construction, approved for construction, and proposed for construction in Nairobi.[4]
As of 2011, Nairobi had 48 completed high-rise buildings, with 3 more under construction, and another 3 proposed.
